MORE HOURS NEEDED FOR SCHOOL CHAPLAINS
Tuesday, 19 July 2016 10:22
Pastoral Care workers are fulfilling an important role in Tatiara Schools, and two members of the Chaplaincy Support Group met with Council recently to advocate for more funding. Chaplains work with students and sometimes their families as well, on issues including friendships, bullying, depression, grief and loss, leadership, mentoring and behaviour. All schools in the Tatiara have one part-time Chaplain, working with more than 1000 students. Representatives said that each school had provided positive feedback about the Chaplaincy program, but more hours were needed. They said the workers were funded for a certain number of hours by the government and by the fundraising efforts of the support group, but sometimes outside funding had to be sourced to gain extra hours. Tatiara council members pledged $10,000 to the program.
