| Livestock SA’s Southern Regional annual meeting was held in Mount Gambier last week, with more than 60 producers attending the sheep industry blueprint workshop and dinner afterwards. Key points of the workshop were animal welfare and biosecurity. Former Victorian Premier Denis Napthine was a special guest speaker, and the former vet encouraged livestock producers to seize the significant opportunities for Aussie red meat exports, particularly in the emerging markets in Asia. Dr Napthine said that with Australia’s reputation for high-quality produce, clean environment and focus on animal welfare, farmers have the opportunity to take advantage of Australia’s reputation in the global marketplace as ethical red meat producers. During the formalities of the meeting, State President of Livestock SA Geoff Power from Orroroo, reported on the groups continued frustrations the State Government and livestock industry funds. He said producers need more transparency and control over how grower contributions to both sheep and cattle industry funds were spent, and cited that the group is frustrated over the State Government’s level of control in this area. They’re still waiting for the government to approve increases to the contribution rates, and during the meeting a motion was passed to request that Minister Leon Bignall approve the contribution rates increase without delay. |
