FARMING ACCIDENTS & FATALITY FIGURES HIGH
Monday, 25 July 2016 10:09
Figures out by the National Rural Health Alliance into farming accidents and fatalities remain alarming, even though there are half the number of deaths compared to 20 years ago. In 2015, there were 73 farm fatalities throughout Australia – which is equivalent to one death every five days on average. Sadly, one in five of those deaths was a child. Shearing sheds are one of the most dangerous places, and working alone out on the farm is a huge risk factor as well. Last year half of all farm fatalities were attributed to farm machinery, tractors and quad bikes; but death from drowning is still the biggest risk factor on farms for children. Tragically, statistics on child farm deaths reveal that that 30% were children who were just visiting.
