FOOTPATH BICYCLE RIDING BAN COMING FOR PENOLA AND MILLICENT
Thursday, 09 June 2016 10:38
Wattle Range Council is banning bicycles from the footpaths in Penola and Millicent from the 1st of July. Changes to state legislation allows cyclists of all ages to ride on footpaths, but Council’s can over-ride this. Wattle Range gathered feedback from residents in both areas, and received sufficient responses to introduce “No Bicycle Zones” in their respective main streets. Penola’s mayor, Peter Gandolfi said that the recent changes that allow cyclists of any age to ride on the footpath, increased the risk of collision with pedestrians and undermined their safety, particularly focusing on those footpaths in the central business districts of Penola and Millicent. The penalty for riding a push bike in a bicycle free area is $53 expiation or up to a $2500 fine and will be enforced by Police.

SEEKING NATURE-LOVING VOLUNTEERS FOR REVEGETATION PROJECT
Thursday, 09 June 2016 10:38
The organisation Nature Glenelg Trust is seeking volunteers to help out with their revegetation project near Frances in the Upper South East. A 1700-acre former farm has been turned into a habitat restoration area, named Eaglehawk Waterhole Restoration Reserve. A large variety of mammals, birds and reptiles call the reserve ‘home’, and in particular, the project aims to restore the habitat of the endangered South East Red-tailed Black Cockatoo. These cockatoos are specialist feeders, requiring particular tree species to thrive in, those being Bull-Oak and Brown Stringybark, which will make up most of the seedlings to be planted at the revegetation event. Volunteers are needed on the 18th of June and Nature Glenelg Trust senior ecologist Bryan Haywood said the project is a great opportunity for community members to get involved with conservation in the area, saying the organisation wants Eaglehawk to be a place where people feel welcome and can get connected with nature. He added that volunteers are welcome to camp out on the property for the event – for more information contact the Nature Glenelg Trust.
