BIG SPEND DUE FOR FEMALE CHANGE ROOMS The South Australian government has just announced plans that it will spend $10m to upgrade and build female change rooms at sporting clubs across the state. Sporting clubs will be able to apply for “no contribution” grants, which in turn will create job opportunities in renovation and construction in various areas. At the moment many sporting clubs and women’s sports teams of all ages, are forced to use male change rooms, car parks, offices or sports grounds to get changed. Having women’s change rooms at our sporting clubs sends an important message to women and girls that they are welcome in a sport and that their club’s culture is one that will facilitate their participation, said Assistant Minister and SA Women in Sport Chair Katrine Hildyard. The Assistant Minister added that through the SA Women in Sport Taskforce, the Government is ensuring that women are equal participants in all aspects of sport in South Australia. FODDER FOR OVERSEAS EXPORT INCREASES FARM DIVERSIFICATION OPTIONS 850,000 tonnes of fodder was exported from Australia to overseas markets over the last year, and this figure is about to rise, as demand from China is growing. Expansion into China would enable huge growth in the sector. ROBE JETTY STILL OPEN TO FOOT TRAFFIC The jetty at Robe looks set to remain open during repairs, but to foot traffic only. The popular fishing spot, that draws large crowds in the summer months, is in need of repair work, and it was thought that it’d have to be closed down while work is carried out. Robe’s mayor Peter Riseley recognises the strong connection that communities’ have with their jetties, and said that closing the jetty would not have been an ideal situation. LOW RURAL WAGES IN WEST WIMMERA ACCORDING TO ABS FIGURES New figures just released by the Australian Bureau of statistics reveal that workers in West Wimmera have the lowest wages in Victoria, and Yarriambiack Shire has the third lowest. Others cited that the drought wouldn’t have helped, but despite the low wages, West Wimmera has the second lowest unemployment rate in the state at 2.8%. The average annual income in West Wimmera is $34,267.
