WYOMI BEACH & KINGSTON JETTY HIT HARD BY STORMS
Tuesday, 19 July 2016 10:23
Last month 5tcb reported on the erosion situation at Wyomi Beach near Kingston, and since the recent stormy weather conditions experienced in the south east, more damage has occurred. After two days of wild weather, a section of sand dune about 7 metres wide has eroded away, taking with it a section of the bicycle track. Beachfront home owners are very worried about future weather events. Wyomi Beach resident Gordon Shreeves said he’d never seen waves like it before. At nearby Kingston, locals were surprised to see a large chunk of their jetty missing after the storms on Monday, with part of the structure carried away by a combination of high tides and strong winds. Kingston District Council staff have engineers assessing the damage to the jetty and the foreshore at Wyomi, with repair costs expected to run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
