VIC GOVERNMENT TO SUBSIDISE SAFETY FOR FARM QUAD BIKES

The Victorian State Government will soon offer a subsidy in the region of $1,200 per farm, to fit rollover protection devices to quad bikes. The scheme will enable farmers to fit the rollover devices onto existing quad bikes, or will help them to be able to purchase safer vehicles. Two farmers in rural Victoria have lost their lives in the past three months, when overturned quad bikes have crushed them.
 
FARMING ACCIDENTS & FATALITY FIGURES HIGH

Figures out by the National Rural Health Alliance into farming accidents and fatalities remain alarming, even though there are half the number of deaths compared to 20 years ago. In 2015, there were 73 farm fatalities throughout Australia – which is equivalent to one death every five days on average. Sadly, one in five of those deaths was a child. Shearing sheds are one of the most dangerous places, and working alone out on the farm is a huge risk factor as well. Last year half of all farm fatalities were attributed to farm machinery, tractors and quad bikes; but death from drowning is still the biggest risk factor on farms for children. Tragically, statistics on child farm deaths reveal that that 30% were children who were just visiting.
